Some days the dream was scarier than reality; other days reality was scarier than the dream.
Today was going to be the latter.
At first, she stirred with a head full of fog. It took moments for her thoughts to coalesce into something that resembled consciousness. Unfortunately, the more aware she became the more her memory cleared, and the last sight that her eyes had bore witness flashed through her mind.
Reflexively, Tegan shot upright, screamed, and threw her arms in front of her face to protect her from the phantom blast.
“Tegan! Tegan!” the nurse called out, grasping her shoulders and holding her steady from any more flailing. “It’s okay. You’re in Sickbay. You’re going to be just fine.”
Tegan flinched as the nurse attempted to guide her back onto the biobed. Her chest inflated and deflated rapidly as the adrenaline coursed through her veins. As she settled, she felt a soreness over her face.
“What—” Her fingers touched the scars that was supposed to be her youthful skin. Her voice filled with quiet fear. “What happened?”
A long while after the nurse finished his explanation. Tegan was quiet while the nurse ensured that Tegan’s wounds were sufficiently healed. The nurse excused himself, knowing other patients may still need critical care. Left alone, Tegan slowly rose up again and sat upright. Her fingers continued to explore the scars. She picked an instrument off the nearby cart that had sufficient area to reflect Tegan’s face.
She wept.
