"I'm so sorry."
Grace had heard the words coming from the cadet. She had to admit, she wasn't entirely certain how to respond to them. One thing she felt confident in was that Cadet Burke had certainly grown up today, though probably not under the most ideal of circumstances. Her eyes turned to meet the Cadet's and she gave her a small nod as she finished working on her leg.
"There we go," Grace stated. "It may feel itchy at times, maybe even brief periods of numbness. That's to be expected. Try to avoid any strenuous activities for the next 24 to 36 hours." Grace had only just finished speaking when Lt. Commander Stavish collected Cadet Burke and escorted her over to Tegan. Both of the women were young and had endured a great deal of trauma. At this point, Grace couldn't imagine better hands for those two ladies to find themselves in.
A pair of science officers moved towards Grace, one of them coughing heavily. Grace gestured at the now vacant biobed. "What happened?" she asked as she began to scan him with a nearby tricorder.
"There was an explosion and...," the other science officer began coughing as well. When he was able to speak again he continued. "there was smoke everywhere." Grace had begun scanning the second science officer.
"You're both suffering from smoke inhalation," Grace reported. She set the tricorder down and proceeded to prepare a hypospray. "There a small collection of chemicals that are toxic, but not lethal in the amounts that you've inhaled. I'm going to give you both a dose of tri-ox compound which should make breathing easier for you both, and help get rid of those coughs."
The familiar hiss sounded as the hypospray touch the skin on their necks. She picked up the tricorder and scanned once more. "Your oxygen levels are up... carbon and those other chemicals are down. I'll check on you both shortly to make sure you're fine." Grace closed the tricorder and then made a few notations on her PADD. She briefly skimmed through all the patients' charts that had been treated, wanting to know if they would need to call in crew members to donate additional blood or plasma. Considering the volume of patients they'd received, it wouldn't be a surprise. However, she noticed a rather alarming coincidence: they were all human.
Every last patient they'd seen in Sickbay had been human. Statistically, that should have been impossible. Grace quickly moved towards the nearest office. She stepped briefly into Doctor Osler-Drew's office to see if she could confirm what she was seeing. Was it possible that someone had been hurt and unable to call for help? "Computer, give me the location of every Vulcan currently aboard the Talon."
"There are currently no Vulcans aboard the USS Talon."
Grace blinked. How could there be no Vulcans aboard the ship. "Locate all Bajorans, Klingons or Denobulans aboard the ship?"
"There are currently no Bajorans, Klingons or Denobulans aboard the USS Talon."
"Computer," Grace began, her own heart rate elevated from what she was hearing, "how many non-Terran crew members are presently aboard the USS Talon?"
"There are no non-Terran crew members currently aboard the USS Talon."
That was impossible. Grace glanced back out into Sickbay, only to see the impossible. The computer seemed to be telling the truth. A series of questions flooded Grace's mind: When did this happen? How did it happen? Where were her friends? It was easy to panic... too easy, but it wasn't a luxury that she had. Not if there was something that could be done about it.
"Computer download a count of life signatures aboard the ship at this moment, and break down the count by species," Grace said. "Set up comparison of registered crew count again break down the count by species. Transfer lists to this PADD." There was a brief chime, and Grace stared down at the PADD to confirm that the computer was complying with her request. Seeing it only made it more alarming.
Grace rushed out of the office, her eyes quickly searching for its owner. She moved past a few patients that had attempted to get her attention. And then, she saw him. "Doctor Osler-Drew!" she said as he was examining a patient. "Sir, you need to see this." She tried to keep her voice as even as possible, but wasn't entirely certain she had succeeded. "Now," she added with a hint of emphasis. She held out the PADD towards him.
It wasn't a problem that she had been looking for, and it certainly wasn't one that she believed she could solve. Though, she trusted that Dr. Osler-Drew would knew what to do. He certainly had a better idea of what to do than she.
