“Thank you Lieutenant, please keep an eye on those officers and see if you can refine your data. I want to know what condition they’re in if possible.”
"Yes, sir," she replied, nodding. She set up the computer to scan their vital signs as best they could at that distance. "They look to be in good health from here," she said. "But we'd only pick up on anything major from orbit, really. You'd need to be closer to get a better reading. The team in the shuttle on the planet would probably be able to tell you more than I can."
"How recent was the second spike?"
She pulled up the timecodes on the two spikes, and looked up the most recent.
"Maybe ten, fifteen minutes ago?" she said. "Not long. The spike is a curve, so the start was about fifteen minutes ago, the drop-off back to normal about ten. It's hard to know whether the team would be affected right away or somewhere in the middle." It depended on the required intensity and when that was reached.
The turbolift doors opened and Hunter rushed onto the bridge and immediately barrrelled into the bathroom. The Orion sauntered out after him, looking far too nonchalent for her own good in Georgie's opinion, and headed for the communications console. Was that her relief officer? Georgie still wasn't sure what the protocol was for swapping over shifts on the bridge.
Nothing is this confusing in my environmental control room, she thought, ruefully.
She watched the bathroom door close behind Hunter, then Sig pull out his tricorder.
"He's fine."
That was a matter of opinion.
Let's see if he's still fine when I've done with him.
Sig joined Georgie at her station and looked at her console. As he did so, Georgie glanced over at Emmarie and was surprised to see her looking back. Maybe she was also trying to decide how to swap a shift on on he bridge.
"That kind of energy would knock someone unconscious almost instantaneously." Sig was familiar with it. "Captain," he said, turning around and returning to stand near M'Khol, "this energy beam is very similar to the weapon that almost killed me on Aquira. Perhaps the Aescans and the Aquirans traded technology before the disaster. Still, that means there are people on Aesco who know how to use it." He frowned. "There are no Aquirans on Aesco, are there?"
None of that sounded very good at all; an energy weapon that had nearly been killing people? Suddenly she much prefered her own adventure, even if it had included getting somewhat intoxicated on some native fruit, an experience which had left her with the oddest sort of a hangover the following day.
“We haven’t detected anything other than the Federation life signs and natives on the planet."
"And definitely no Aquirans as of right now," she added. "Unless they're shielded from our sensors in some way."
The bathroom doors opened again and Hunter came out. He looked up at Georgie and gave her a sort of sheepish look, then looked over to Dorian.
"Sorry Sir. The cleanliness of the Aescan sanitary facilities was hardly conducive to a willingness to frequent them."
And then he crossed to Sig and M'Khol. Georgie blinked twice, then looked down at her console. That was it? A sheepish look? Had he realised he'd screwed up, perhaps? Or maybe he just thought it appropriate to be suitably repentant about going to the bathroom on the bridge. With so many people around she couldn't really tell what anyone was feeling, even Hunter who's feelings she'd gotten better at spotting in a sea of others.
She looked back up just in time to see Hunter glancing at the Orion. She met his gaze and he looked away, but she kept looking for a few moments more before she did.
OK, so maybe he had something else to be guilty about.
Great.
Just what she needed; competition from an Orion.
"Feeling better?"
She bit her lip. Quite the opposite. Not that he'd been asking her, but still. She liked to pretend someone was asking after her well being since she'd long given up on Hunter doing it - the general social pleasantries weren't something he seemed to bother with much - and Zi wasn't around. And who else was there? Maybe Ziana was right. Maybe she did need to make some friends for a change. Maybe-
Her mental thought process was derailed by Emmarie playing the audio. Georgie felt a knot in her stomach; that certainly sounded like they were talking about the away team.
“Get me Commander Osbourne.”
Georgie moved to do so, then realised that with Emmarie at communications that probably superseded her need to do so. Instead, she double-checked all the transport locks on the away team.
Just in case.
