“Shields are down, Sir.”
"Thank you, Commander," Kealan replied automatically. He needed to make that official, give her the next hollow pip, and allow her time to celebrate. Now, though, good feelings were not in the cards.
"Transporter room reports that they have the coordinates and are ready to commence transport on your order, Captain."
"Lower your shields," the Captain said to the image on the screen. A notice appeared on his monitor, telling him that security had engaged an additional alert and Kealan's lips pursed together for a second.
Gor'tahk smiled, revealing teeth that showed the ravages of time. "I would not wish to be in your place, Monroe," he remarked before giving the order to his own crew to lower their shields.
Kealan confirmed for himself that they were down, refusing to reply to Gor'tahk's statement. "Monroe to Transporter Room, initiate transport." A few anxious seconds elongated time.
"You have fulfilled your orders," Gor'tahk said, which was as close as he was going to come to giving thanks for the operation. One of his officers stepped close, communicating something to the Klingon, which caused Gor'tahk to laugh heartily. "And she is not happy."
"You will treat her with respect and will return her unharmed when the object is found," Kealan insisted.
"Respect?" Again, a laugh, but it was followed by a great rise and fall of his chest. "You have my word, Monroe." As the screen switched to the view of the Bird-of-prey, Kealan shook his head slightly. "Raise shields. Helm, take us back to the Pewdin asteroid field." The 'uD'a' dipped downward and entered warp, along with the two vessels that had remained cloaked.
Several minutes passed with Kealan remaining completely silent, unmoving, as if biding his time. Finally, he looked at the back of Robin's head. "Lieutenant Kinin is no longer on the Talon," he said.
