The gentle breeze that moved the foreign trees felt both warm and cool... almost like it adjusted to what the body wanted. The only word that Tek could think of as it slipped through him was 'perfect', as he inserted into instrument into the ground, and set the PADD to take geologic readings.
It was hard to keep focused with such a golden area to relax in. It reminded him of the old pictures of central California, or of the Kendrak Valley on Bajor. Even if the trees were a bit weird, and even if the grasses shined with what looked like dull minerals, Nevir couldn't help but feel completely comfortable.
The device would take another 10 minutes to do a full reading of the structure, so instead of standing there, he took a couple of steps back and leaned against a large tree. Or bush, but it looked like a tree. Leaning on it and slipping down, he reached over and picked up other PADD, one that getting feeds from a surface probe measuring the atmosphere. It was here that he felt his best, not just because of the landscape, but because he was doing something he knew about, something he trained for. Something that will give him back his pips.
That thought brought him back to the object in his pocket, something that he only pulled out when he needed to. A cadet pin. The thing he so loathed, mostly because it reminded him of what he lost. There were alternate versions of him where he was successful, and not a screw-up. Coardi met one personally, and it depressed him. She was able to see what he used to be, instead of what he was.
A beep knocked him from his thinking, and the Bajoran looked down at the latest reading from the probe. This word had a higher oxygen concentration than most Federation worlds. Here the oxygen was about 10% more abundant. Putting down the PADD, he enjoyed the silence of the countryside, and watched as clouds lazily drifted past.
