Two sounds, one complimentary and one full of emotion, cut the silence on the bridge. While Tyler's comment had been meant to buoy up the Captain's spirits, it had the opposite effect. Having to tell the crew such news made him feel as if he had failed them all.
And then, the other shoe dropped.
//"Osler-Drew to Captain Monroe. We will present the casualty list to you as necessary however it is important you know that Dr. Frank Williams has been killed in the line of duty due to an acute neurological failure. We have not yet isolated it but Dr. Williams has genetic make up consists of more than only human DNA, a nearly undetectable thread in a large tapestry. Vargas will be notified shortly as we begin our work to fight this."//
It had been a long-held belief by some that Earth had been visited by alien species prior to the discovery of warp drive. Perhaps a far distant ancestor of Williams had had more than a close encounter.
"Understood, Doctor. Please inform Ruth Maicus of his passing as time dictates. Monroe out." He took in a breath, as if to remind himself he was still alive, but let it out quickly at the sound of one of the remaining officers on the Bridge informing him of an incoming target.
"On screen," he ordered. It was the Hyperion, the Lachlan nowhere in sight. "Hail them!"
"You have a lot of nerve," Mitchell replied once the connection was established. There was no disguising the emotion on the man's face, nor the hatred.
Kealan knew that nothing he could say would change the other Captain's mind about him or his motives. At least not at that moment. They had both been set up, but pain clouded rationality and Kealan wasn't even going to try to get Mitchell to understand.
"Both our ships are contaminated," Kealan said. "Nothing gets in, nothing gets out. Our only hope of saving our remaining crew is to work together."
"Go to hell," Mitchell replied as his crew powered up the Hyperion's weapons.
"You don't want to do that," Kealan replied.
"Give me one reason why."
"Because we have the inventor of the genocide device onboard. He's under interrogation right now. You kill him, no hope for an antidote, and any further death will be on your hands." He tapped his combadge. "Commander Vargas, Doctor Osler-Drew, Commander Braddock. Any information regarding your research will be transferred as it comes to the Hyperion."
Mitchell stood motionless on the screen, but there was no misinterpreting the glares from the staff behind him toward their counterparts on the Talon. "Beam over," Mitchell ordered.
"Our command staff has been hit hard," Kealan explained. "We don't have-"
"It's not a request, Captain," Mitchell stated. "It's one of my terms. Then, we can talk."
Kealan stood. "Agreed." After the comm was terminated, Kealan turned around, looking from one Ensign to the other. "Ensign Bergin," he settled his eyes on her. "You have the Conn. See if security has had any luck locating Freeman." Taking one more look at his Bridge, he grinned. "Try not to break my ship." Soon after, he disappeared in a transporter beam and arrived on the Hyperion.
