Lara had prepared carefully. Certainly she knew how to dress formally for an occasion like this. She projected the authority of Starfleet in this sector was confident of her ability to function well in that aspect of her life. Parties of this sort were common for one in her position and politics assured their frequency.
She was proud to be a part of the Federation’s expansion into the Gamma Quadrant. The Station on which she stood was proof of months and years of planning finally coming together.
But tonight was different. She waited in an anti-room off the main ball room until everything was ready. She heard Etheron and then Ahska announced and knew it would be her turn soon. She turned when the door opened and a security officer let Vincent into the room.
“Vincent,” she smiled a welcome and then turned to face the double doors. Her heart pounded and she felt nervous jitters. Not for the crowd in the room beyond, no. It was for the man at her side who’d been strong enough to brave the eyes and speculative stares he’d likely suffer at her side all evening.
She reached out and squeezed his hand and then slipped it into his elbow and nodded at the officer. He whispered a warning and she could hear the ‘ruffles and flourishes’ begin and on the first of the three due her rank the doors opened and she stepped out toward the head table. Thankfully there were no gun salutes as there would be out of doors on Earth and she’d put the squash on the Admiral’s March.
A voice announced “Eighth Fleet Arriving,” and that was followed by officers rising to their feet all over the room and then subsiding again as she reached Etheron.
She performed a small bow of her head to acknowledge his superior rank. Her eyes slid to Ahska with a quick wink before returning to her father.
“Good evening sir,” she said softly. “May I present Vincent Kane?”
