"All the starships have gone back to the wormhole. Only the Talon remains."
The forced smile died on Oliver's lips. He cleared his throat and looked away, attempting to regain his optimism. "Right, well, I'm sure we'll be fine anyway." He smiled at Grace when she agreed. "Yeah, I mean what could be worse than what I've already been through today?" He added, with a strained chuckle.
"The lake where you fell? How far is it from here?"
"The lake isn't too far from here." Oliver said, distractedly. It felt as though there was something scratching just under his skin. It felt like worms. "We're going to be all right, aren't we? There's definitely no reason to be worried. I mean, today couldn't get any worse, could it? I have reached my bad day quota."
He glanced down at his hand and his eyes widened. He could have sworn he saw something moving under the flesh of his palm. He licked his lips and squeezed his hand again, trying to remember whether he'd been impregnated by aliens and forgotten about it. He thought of parasitic wasps and the thought was not at all comforting. He wondered how females could bear having another being inside of them for so long.
Babies aren't parasites. He reminded himself.
"Everything is going to be fine." He said, unwittingly tempting fate.
//"Diran to medical team, I need a team at my coordinates asap. We have a birth in progress, so keep the line open and tell me what to do until you arrive."//
"Oh..." Oliver's eyes widened as he heard Kinin's scream. "Oh, my gods."
