Aevo committed all of the names given to him to memory, though he knew he would have difficulties pronouncing some of them. It was inconvenient that he had not been allowed a device on which to write his own notes. Suddenly, the blonde was directly in front of him, her arm jutting forward until her pale hand rested on the back of his chair. His quick intake of breath brought to him the light scent of her skin and hair, but it was lost upon the alien who felt fear quite distinctly in that moment.
"No, Mr. Aevo, you should be angry. What you saw was a waste of life. It tears you apart because it was senseless and it was wrong. I'm sorry to tell you that you won't ever forget what you saw."
"But I want-"
"This is why we are here. The burden of truth rests square on your shoulders, Mr. Aevo. Personally, I don't give much-a damn about nebulas or warp cores but what I do care about is bringing folks who do bad things down to their knees and serving up what they deserve in accordance to the law...even if it's my own people."
As she spoke her final sentence, his head backed away, until it was pressed against the chair. This woman, this alien, was really, really intimidating. She stood, returning to her prior position, and he sat up, straightening his robe and wiping his sweaty palms across the fabric as he did so.
"You said the Talon fired..."
"Yes," he replied, his eyes moving from Eden to Robin.
"Could you please describe how they fired? What type of weapon did it look like? And earlier you mentioned unusual sensor readings in your survey, what kind? Why were they unusual?"
Aevo blinked quickly. Too many questions, too fast. "How they fired? What kind of weapon? I have no idea. It's not like I could see inside of the ship to watch it being done." He switched to the next volley of questions. "As for the sensor readings, I can provide you with the data, if you would like. We thought it was a malfunction in our sensors at first, but all of the ships in the Fleet have encountered it from time to time. My job was to see if it was a new astronomical phenomenon."
"We will need these answers in as specific detail as you can recall. Did you pick up any sensor readings on the Talon and the beam that you saw fired from the vessel in question?"
He shook his head. "It happened too fast," he replied. "I was not about to stick around and ask questions."
"Also, I would like to know, as specific as possible, in what condition the ship that was destroyed was in prior to its destruction".
It took several seconds for him to reply and he looked down at his twitching hands, anxious to have them back in his pockets, as was his habit. "I don't know all the details," he said, finally. "Their engines were failing."
"Did you attempt any contact with the ship in distress? You said they were headed home...how do you know who 'they' were or where they were going? Or is that a conclusion you came up with yourself?"
He looked at her with a confused expression on his face. "They are my people. I heard their distress call, but they weren't responding to me. There wasn't much I could do. I am just a scientist, and my ship had no technology for a rescue. The direction they were headed was toward Ribeniam. The ship needed help. Where else would they be going?" He looked at all of the aliens in the room. "Wouldn't you head home if your ship was in trouble?"
"Another ship enters the scene of this tragic fiasco, how did it show up exactly? Did it drop out of warp or slip out of a cloaking device? Could you describe the ship that you claim is the USS Talon?"
He clenched his hands together to stop them from shaking. "It just appeared. I don't know how!" He tried to calm himself, as his voice had risen dramatically. They were just looking for answers, that's all, he told himself. Reluctantly separating his hands from each other, he began describing the Talon with words and shaky hand motions. Saucer, nacelles, etc. When he was done, he swallowed twice and looked over to Nila. "How do you deal with loss of life," he asked the physician. "Will it always hurt?"
