The day started out like any other.
Eden's eyes blinked open to find Orville lazily snoring on her chest. After some furry snuggles and kisses she got ready for her shift, thoughts of William and Starfleet's status quo tried to haunt her in the shower like a ghost but they were forced in their box before breakfast- wheat toast with banana slices sprinkled in chia seeds.
She put on the finishing touches to her uniform, a touch of lip gloss and a warm, welcoming smile, and shouted her goodbyes to Tahp as the doors to their home slid shut.
It was always obvious when Eden walked into the security office as there was a sudden increase of volume with greetings being exchanged, each person getting their customized salutation except Commander Jenison (one day she'd warm Jenison up to the idea of getting hugs) and Commander Roman (who didn't need hugs since he had Braddock.)
"You got something in your teeth," Haywood said, giving her a nod.
Eden covered her mouth with her hand with half hearted effort, her tongue running over her teeth.
Haywood chuckled and suffered a teasing smack on the arm.
"Shut up," she chuckled. "You're trouble."
She sat down to begin the daily routine, giving Haywood a playful side eye before checking through the backlog of business needing to be sorted and handled, but the jovial behavior soon slipped away. The smile faded, the professional persona taking over. Work was work, after all. Every security officer had a game face.
The ghost slipped out of the screen and dug its fingers into her chest, making it uncomfortable to breath and turned her skin into goosepimples underneath her uniform.
No one could ever doubt Eden's loyalty. She did what was asked of her.
So she waited, shielding her unhappiness from those around her. If it weren't for her and William's beach adventure she wouldn't have thought anything of it but she had one thought now. Bullshit.
TAG: Those who have been summoned...
